1. Introduction
I start by saying that without Gandhi, India would have never been freed from British rule in 1947. Gandhi led a movement that stirred the very heart of India and united his country to fight for Independence. The battles were not fought with weapons and armies but instead he used Civil Disobedience and passive resistance to force concessions from Britain and gain the respect and admiration of the world. Gandhi called this method of attack "Satyagraha" which means Truth and Firmness in Sanskrit.
Did he get help along the way ? Of course he did. The Congress party supported him by providing a political platform from which he could share his ideals with others. Leaders like Naidu were a very important part to the success since Britain was occupied with war in Europe and therefore could not concentrate all her efforts on India.
Who was this Mahatma Gandhi. What ideals drove this David to take on this Goliath? What exactly did he accomplish? How did he do it? In the following pages I will attempt to answer all there questions and Conclude with the legacy left behind by a man who lived in poverty yet inspired other movements throughout the world.
